Week 1
Welcome to 8th grade math~ This week students will be introduced to classroom expectations. They will receive a studyguide for UNIT 1 that has a signature page DUE AUGUST 15th. Please sign and return this. Students will develop group norms. Participate in 'getting to know you' activities and FRIDAY....Drum roll....will take their first pretest over Unit1. Unit 1 involves 8NS1 and 8NS2-Example: convert .111111 (repeating) to a fraction; which decimal is the best approximation of the irrational number (pi). Sort rational vs irrational numbers, Where does radical 7 fall on a numberline? ---so get ready!!!!!
FOOD FOR THOUGHT:
A lily pad doubles in size everyday for 20 days. On the 20th day the lily pad
takes up the entire pond. On what day was the lily pad exactly half the size of
the pond?
Week 2 August 18-22-This week students will investigate Rational and Irrational numbers. Students will read a skit aloud and relate to mathematical concepts. They will be able to classify numbers in the real number system as Irrational, Rational, Integers, Whole Numbers, or Natural Numbers. Students will take a quiz on Friday over 8NS1 and 8NS2. Students will see real life examples of rational and irrational examples (Air-force, shopping, game design). Students will work cooperatively with pairs to investigate decimal patterns. They will test the 'mythbusters' 7 paperfold and practice SHOW/Tell writing strategies. Exciting things! Don't forget the classroom management planhttp://www.math-play.com/rational-and-irrational-numbers-game/rational-and-irrational-numbers-game.html

Sept 2nd-5th
Students recently received their first assessment results back. Students did well for the most part. Retest/reteach station and activities have been provided. They must:show test corrections, show reflection sheet to the teacher, show completed study guide and retrieve the activities from the station--(Reteach paper, Skills sheet, Compass) These have been assigned once the reflection sheet has been filled out so that I know specifically the standards not mastered. (For ex: if students only mastered standard 1 and 2 then they would do reteach on 3 and 4) Retests can be received from me and are different for each student (fill in the blank where I provided the number to be computed). Any questions let me know. We are off to a great year. A practicum student will be joining two of the classes. Maps Goal Setting this week. (We test THursday) Woohoo. Scientific notation. A burger in outerspace? Stay tuned.
October27-31 Open house was a success thank you for all who attended. If you could not make it please call and schedule and appointment or to chat. Students have the Retest requirements-Unit A should be in and Unit 1B was given last week. Students completed a reflection sheet to identify areas of weakness, conference with teacher and will discuss reteach. Students can work during flex on skills. Homework on Oct 27 complete Ray Floob Puzzle. Homework Oct 28 Finish stations. Review distributing and combining like terms. We practiced with ordering fast food :) Keep practicing older skills as well....think back to Creepy Crawlers (scientific notation and the Zombie Apocalypse of Erlanger! Muhahah.
Nov 17-Nov 25
Students just received their progress reports. They are working on Unit Retest Requirements for the last assessment (1b) Reflection sheets have been issued. Students are encouraged to work on compass OUTSIDE of school, as well as, the class activities. Students are building their vocabulary and practicing the SHOW/TELL method. Tuesday the 25 will be our UNIT ASSESSMENT. Students have a study guide. We will be modeling systems of linear equations this week with algebra tiles, participating in a web quest, Completing a drawing a activity for facing math and many other activities. IT is important to continue to practice test taking skills and goal set. Remember to ask questions.
